Why should I visit Costa Rica Surf Camp?

Costa Rica Surf Camp is run by family and friends who love what they do. Have an authentic experience that you will remember for a lifetime at the best surf camp in Dominical. 

Our Surf Camp was founded in 2003 and continues to grow. We have a professional staff that will work side by side with you to improve your surf skills. 

We are located in beautiful Dominical, on the southern pacific side of Costa Rica. There are waves 365 days out of the year and everyone always has a smile on their faces.

 

What is Playa Dominical like?

Playa Dominical is a small beach town of the Southern Pacific Coast of Costa Rica. With just 2 roads in Dominical, it is easy to walk everywhere without the need of a rental car. 

Dominical is different than other parts of the coastline because it is free of development thanks to marine time laws that preserve the raw and natural beauty. This has attracted many eco-centered locals to preserve the local culture. You won’t find any chain restaurants here!

 

How long is the surf camp at Costa Rica Surf Camp?

Normally the surf camp is 6 nights/7 days. Although you can extend this for as long as you like!

Can I arrive any day of the week?

Normally people arrive to Costa Rica Surf Camp on Saturdays but you can arrive any day of the week that works best for you!

What airport do I fly to and is transportation included?

You will want to fly into Juan Santamaría Airport (SJO) in Alajuela, San Jose, Costa Rica.

Alternatively, you can take a puddle jumper from SJO to Quepos, which is only 30 minutes from Playa Dominical.

Yes, round trip transportation is included in our surf camp packages.

How long is the drive from SJO to Dominical?

The drive from SJO to Dominical is 3 hours.

If you would like to shorten this travel time, you can fly into Quepos from San Jose, which is only a 20 minute flight. Quepos is 30 minutes from Dominical.

What is there to do besides surf in Dominical?

What is the food like in Costa Rica?

The typical cuisine in Costa Rica is lots of fruit, rice and beans! We take advantage of the amazing bananas, mangos, pineapple and watermelons!

A typical breakfast in Costa Rica includes eggs, gallo pinto (a delicious mix of black bean and rice) tomatoes, plantains and cheese. Costa Rica is famous for their coffee, and locals normal have more than several cups a day.

Casado is the typical lunch and dinner menu item. It includes your choice of meat accompanied by rice and beach and a small salad.

How much can we expect to pay for lunch and dinners?

Depending on your budget, Dominical has restaurants for everyone. You can spend anywhere from $5 to $20 on lunch and dinner, your choice!

I am a novice/intermediate/advanced surfer, is Costa Rica Surf Camp right for me?

Yes. Costa Rica Surf Camp offers surf lessons for every level of surfers out there. From people who have never touched a surfboard to people who have been surfing every day for the last 30 years.

We have given surf lessons from people starting as young as 4 up until 82 years old.

Do you offer just daily surf lessons?

Costa Rica Surf Camp does offer daily surf lessons.

We offer small, personalized surf lessons with a 2 student per instructor ratio. The classes run about 2 hours and are scheduled depending on the tide. We provide fruit, water and have rash guards for use. The cost is $50 per person.

How to a reserve my space at Costa Rica Surf Camp?

Once you have filled out our reservation form, we have confirmed availability. Once we are able to confirm availability we ask for a 25% deposit to hold your space. This is done by credit or debit card via PayPal. You will receive an invoice with instructions to complete your deposit to your e-mail.

What is a typical day at Costa Rica Surf Camp?

We understand that you are on vacation and while surfing is the main reason you are coming to Dominical, we also want to make sure you relax!

We can add in as many activities as you want or when not surfing, you can hang out by the pool or take a walk on the beach and practice your surfing.

Your morning will start off with a delicious breakfast. Since our surf lessons are scheduled depending on the tide, you will either surf in the morning and have to afternoon off for extra adventures or vise versa. We keep your schedule flexible so it works for you!

What are the accommodations like at Costa Rica Surf Camp?

Costa Rica Surf Camp partners with several hotels offering accommodations at any budget. Most of the accommodations are located in Dominical, but we do offer luxury accommodations located a short drive up the mountain with a view that will make you never want to leave.

What is the best time of the year for waves?

Costa Rica has surf 365 days a year and the answer to this questions depends on your experience level.

Our dry season is great for beginners. From January to April the swells are normally smaller and ideal for learning.

The rainy season bring bigger swells, which is great for intermediate to advanced surfers. 

Even with that being said, there are always beaches where the waves on the inside are small and outside reefs where the waves are bigger.

When is the rainy season?

The official rainy season in Costa Rica is from May 1 – December 1.

Do I need a wetsuit?

No 🙂

The water in Costa Rica is around 86 degrees and you definitely do not need a wetsuit.

Do you rent surfboards?

Yes, we do rent surfboards is our surf shop. We have over 50 surfboards to choose from.

Is breakfast/lunch/dinner included?

Breakfast is included in our surf camp packages while lunch and dinner are not. We do have the option for meal cards, please contact us for more information.

Are surf pictures included in the surf camp packages?

Surf pictures are included for one surf session during your stay at our surf camp. Our photographer will choose the best day depending on weather and time for this to take place.

Surf pictures can be added on to daily surf lessons if booked in advance.

Is surfboard rental included in the surf camp packages?

As a part of our surf camp packages, you have unlimited access to our surfboard equipment!
